Samsung Introduces SSD 990 EVO That Comes With PCIe 4.0 And PCIe 5.0 Interface Support

Aside from their smart devices and televisions, Samsung is also a well-known brand for their computer components. Recently, they have finally officially introduced their latest SSD storage offering.

Named Samsung SSD 990 EVO, this SSD storage comes with a unique capability where it supports PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 connections with data reading speeds of 5000MB/s and data writing of 4200MB/s. It comes in the M.2 2280 size which is supported by a wide variety of motherboards in a wide variety of devices, including desktop computers, laptops and game consoles.

In terms of storage size, the SSD 990 EVO comes in two storage options, namely 1TB and 2TB. The uniqueness of this support of two different PCIe connections is in terms of the amount of bandwidth required to move them. With a PCIe 4.0 x4 connection, it uses four PCIe lanes, while if connected to a plug that uses a PCIe 5.0 x2 connection, it uses only two lanes.

Technically, specific support for PCIe 5.0 is not something that is necessary right now, but it is quite useful if you want to upgrade your computer to a motherboard with support for that connection, this SSD can be reused without problems.

So far, only the 1TB and 2TB SSD 990 Evo models are currently being offered at $124.99 and $209.99 in select markets. Some reports also say that a 4TB option will be offered later, but it is not known when it will arrive.
