There is still a need for hard disk drive (HDD) storage especially in data centers even though it is slower than SSD storage. This week the Seagate Exos X Mozaic 3+ was launched with a capacity of 30TB which makes it the largest HDD on the market.
Exos X Mozaic 3+ is marketed for use in data centers specifically for AI processing. It consists of ten disks each with a capacity of 3TB. Seagate's technology allows it to produce disks with a density of 1.742 TB per square inch.
They have no plans to offer HDDs with more than 10 disks in each unit due to size, noise, long-term durability and cost factors. But instead Seagate will produce disks with a capacity of 5TB to offer HDDs with 50TB storage by 2025.
The launch of the Seagate Exos X Mozaic 3+ comes a year later than Seagate's original target of selling 30TB HDDs last year. Each Seagate Exos X Mosaic 3+ is sold for around $450 (~RM2122) each in the first quarter of 2024.
