Use of Third-Party Printer Ink Can Spread Malware – HP CEO

HP, a technology brand from the United States known for their electronic equipment offerings is also known for their printers. However, lately they seem to have prevented their users from installing third party ink cartridges for various reasons.

Modern HP printers come with a refillable ink cartridge system, but to use it, you have to use your own HP ink. Previously, to save costs, most companies or individuals would use third-party ink, but this has been blocked by HP recently with a new update released for their printers.

Despite receiving opposition from their own customers, HP CEO Enrique Lores said in an interview that apart from defending HP's intellectual property rights in terms of using this ink, he also said that malware can be spread through the use of third-party cartridges or ink refills.

According to him, the use of this third-party cartridge allows data to be transferred from the cartridge to the printer, which can then be transferred to the company's internal network and to any computer that does not have such good security.

There is no denying that modern hacking technology is getting more sophisticated and creative, but so far there have been no reports that malware can be spread through the use of third-party printer ink cartridges or refills.
