The most interesting thing about the Google Pixel 8 series and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series this year is the generative artificial intelligence (AI) feature that does some things that have been considered magic. The focus is no longer on the hardware and we predict this year the software will be the main attraction before the device is purchased. When announcing Apple's financial report for the last quarter, Tim Cook confirmed that generative AI features will be offered on the company's devices by the end of 2024.
This somewhat confirms that iOS 18 will undergo the biggest changes so far. For two years in a row iOS has only received minor feature updates and no significant design changes. If Apple wants to continue to compete with Android, features like Circle to Search, AI photo editing and AI writing assistance need to be offered on their devices as well.
The year 2024 is predicted to challenge all smartphone manufacturers. Apple in particular is expected to experience a reduction in iPhone production of up to 14%. Last quarter iPhone sales in China fell 13% compared to the same quarter in 2022. Competition from local rivals, rising patriotism and the resurgence of Huawei are among the contributors to this decline.
