Last year Disney+ announced they would begin blocking password sharing starting with Canada. Today Disney+ subscribers in the United States began receiving emails reminding them to no longer share passwords. The warning comes a few days after Hulu customers also received a similar warning.
Password sharing was enforced to boost revenue for the platform, which has yet to post a profit since operating since 2019. Disney+ may see Netflix subscriber numbers increase after banning password sharing and introducing an ad-supported plan. Their ad-supported plan is also now offered by Prime Video.
Clearly the era of cheaper streaming plans than pay TV is over. The reality is that people cannot afford to subscribe to multiple platforms simultaneously. At the end of the day Netflix is the winner with growing subscribers even though early last year it was predicted to be buried by Disney+, Paramount+ and HBO Max as the stock value plummeted.
