A few years ago the CEO of Netflix said their competition was Fortnite instead of Disney+. Yesterday Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that the House of Mouse will invest $1.5 billion to own a stake in Epic Games, the company that developed Fortnite.
Through this investment, Disney's "world of entertainment" will be built in the world of Fortnite. All the popular IPs of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more will be accessible through this world of entertainment. Although the phrase metacity is not used, this is apparently a Disney world inside the Fortnite ecosystem that is accessible at all times.
Disney characters are playable, Disney content can be produced and more importantly for IP holders it can be purchased by players. The agreement between Disney and Epic Games in Fortnite is for several years. Marvel characters have previously been offered for a limited time in Fortnite so today's announcement isn't too surprising.
Video games have been generating more revenue than movies lately. The synergy between Disney and Epic Games will surely benefit both parties. Especially for Disney who saw their film and theme park revenues start to plummet.
