Germany Begins Trial of Working Four Days a Week

The four-day week movement was introduced in the UK in 2021. The results of tests carried out by more than 70 UK companies found that productivity increased, staff took less sick leave, less absenteeism and reported feeling happier. The success in the UK opened the door to tests to be carried out in Germany.

A total of 45 companies will participate in the first phase of testing working four days a week organized by consulting firm Intraprenör and the NGO 4 Day Week Global (4DWG). Germany is now facing a problem of productivity and also a decreasing workforce. The introduction of four working days is expected to attract people to return to work.

In a poll conducted in Germany before, 71% percent of respondents said they would like to be given the opportunity to work four days a week. Meanwhile only 46% of employers said they were open to the idea of offering shorter working hours.
