MUIS – Edible 3D Printed Meat If Using Halal Animal DNA

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) issued a fatwa allowing Muslims to eat meat produced through 3D printing if it only uses the DNA of halal animals. The fatwa was issued last Friday after being discussed by MUIS since 2022. This makes Singapore one of the first countries to have a fatwa on the law of eating 3D printed meat.

3D printed meat is seen as a solution to the food resource issue in Singapore which requires it to be imported from foreign countries. It not only solves food safety issues but also reduces pollution issues associated with raising animals such as cattle, chickens and pigs.

Singapore is an aggressive country developing 3D printed and synthetic meat technology in the world. It is also the first country in the world to allow synthetic meat made from vegetables to be sold in 2020. Last year, NUS produced squid meat using a combination of 3D printing and vegetable sources.
