Over 700 Experts Sign Open Letter Urging Government to Establish DeepFake Software Controls

Spreading fake images on the internet is now easier thanks to access to generative artificial intelligence (AI) that can generate images that look very realistic. The pornographic image case involving Taylor Swift caused searches for the singer to be blocked from Twitter for a while. With AI models becoming more and more advanced, there will come a time when this issue of false images will be difficult to contain and cause chaos.

Therefore more than 700 experts in the world of AI, academia, women's rights and technology have signed the open letter Disrupting the Deepfake Supply Chain which urges the government to take steps to establish control over software that can produce fake images, videos and audio like DeepFake.

Among their calls is to make the possession of fake pornographic images involving children a crime. The government also needs to create punishment for individuals who produce and spread dangerous DeepFake content.

At the same time software developers should also be asked to ensure that their products are not used to produce harmful fake content. If the controls used on the application are found to be easily bypassed to produce such content, action may be imposed by the authorities.

This open letter is similar to last year's open letter which called for AI development to be monitored and slowed as it increases the risk of human extinction. Although thousands of signatures were collected, no policy changes were made by the government even though recommendations were given.
