PlayStation 5 Fails to Meet Sales Targets – Now in End of Lifecycle

Sony announced their financial report for the last quarter of 2023. Among the highlights is that 8.2 million units of the PlayStation 5 console have been sold which is below the original target of around 9 million console units. For this reason, Sony has now changed its target of selling 21 million PlayStation 5 units for fiscal year 2023 compared to the original target of 25 million units.

Also stated in the report is that the PlayStation 5 is now in the "end stage of its life cycle" after its launch in December 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic it was almost impossible to buy a PlayStation 5 due to the limited number of units. Only last year it was easier to buy and allowed it to reach the sales figure of 50 million consoles. It is still behind PlayStation 3 (87 million), PlayStation (102.49 million) and PlayStation 2 (155 million).

This year also Sony will not launch new games from their own studio. One ray of light in the financial report is that the Spider Man 2 game has sold over 10 million units.
