Poco X6 Pro Review – More Hyper With HyperOS

Poco this year has come up with three new mid-range devices. Two in the premium category, the X6 and X6 Pro, while the M6 is in the basic category. All three devices are also the first new Xiaomi phones for the global market to run the all-new HyperOS out of the box. After using the X6 Pro for a few weeks, I can say that Poco is getting hyper with HyperOS.

As always, Poco's new device is actually just a rebranded Redmi. For the X6 Pro, the device is actually the Redmi K70E which was launched in China last November. It uses a flat-type AMOLED screen with thin bezels, 120Hz refresh rate support, Dolby Vision display and a brightness of 1800 nits.

Both physical buttons of the device are on the left side. The infrared sensor, speaker grill and microphone hole are on top. While another microphone hole, speaker grille, USB-C port and SIM card slot are below. The entire side of the device is flat with a slightly curved back panel making it easy to operate the device with one hand. It's also not so smooth that I dare to use this device without a protective frame.

On the back of the device there is a giant camera bump similar to the previous generation. The finish used on the black color is a glossy type that easily catches fingerprints. But if you get yellow, the finish with extra grip will be given.

SCREEN

For years, Xiaomi's mid-range devices have offered quality screens. A beautiful and bright AMOLED panel, can play Dolby Vision and HDR10+ videos, as well as a software-controlled adaptive refresh rate. The problem with this Poco screen is that 1440p or 2160p videos when played on YouTube often get stuck as if the device's memory is not enough to process the video.

Brightness is no problem, very bright under sunlight. The same goes for the 120Hz refresh rate. But it's a bit disappointing that the 120Hz adaptive mode on this device isn't smart enough, because most of the time I regularly receive 90Hz and 120Hz over 60Hz or lower. This affects battery life.

BIOMETRIC SYSTEM

Poco X6 Pro uses an optical under-screen fingerprint scanner that is fast enough. In fact, Xiaomi HyperOS also comes with a Face Unlock AI feature that is fast enough to scan the user's face with the front camera.

USAGE AND SOFTWARE – HyperOS, Android 14

I was very excited when I heard that the Poco X6 Pro is one of the first Xiaomi devices for the Malaysian market to receive HyperOS. After using it for a few weeks, I'm starting to feel frustrated that Xiaomi still refuses to provide the same user experience between the Chinese and global versions.

The HyperOS on the Poco X6 Pro still has a lot in common with MIUI 14. The most significant difference can only be seen by loyal MIUI users. The interface design has minor changes with it now being closer to iOS than usual.

This device brings good and smooth performance. Animation movements are all fast, memory management is also quite good. Again with virtual memory support up to 8GB that allows many applications to run in the background without sacrificing performance and battery. AI editing features such as Photo Assist on Galaxy AI in the Galaxy S24 series are also provided. It's just that it's still not neat enough.

One new HyperOS update that I love is the cool lock screen customization. The clock theme can then also be matched to the AOD. But, what is still annoying is that most of the customizations depend on the annoying theme store. I like options like One UI, where collections on the device and in the theme store are neatly organized to make it easy for users to make choices.

The thing I can't forgive the most is the amount of annoying ads. I understand that the Poco is a mid-range device and is sold at an affordable price, but an almost full-screen ad video in Game Turbo is extreme.

PERFORMANCE AND BENCHMARKS – Dimensity 8300-Ultra

The Dimensity 8300-Ultra chip is a similar chip to the Dimensity 7200 Ultra. it's just more efficient and has slightly higher GPU capabilities. This means, Redmi Note 13 Pro+ is a camera-focused device and Poco X6 Pro is a performance-focused device. Benchmark tests are also normal, as real-world usage experience makes me feel satisfied.

Geekbench 6

Poco X6 Pro – 1311/4033

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G – 1127/2658

Oppo Reno11 Pro 5G – 934/3389

realme GT3 240W – 1446/3940

Antutu 3D

Poco X6 Pro – 1,199,162

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G – 757,180

Oppo Reno11 Pro 5G – 937,938

realme GT3 240W – 1,249,785

3DMark Wild Life Xtreme

Poco X6 Pro – 2,053/12.30 FPS

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G – cannot be tested

Oppo Reno11 Pro 5G – 1748

realme GT3 240W – 2798 / 16.76 FPS

3DMark Solar Bay

Poco X6 Pro – 3,366/12.80 FPS

Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G – cannot be tested

Oppo Reno11 Pro 5G – not supported

realme GT3 240W – not supported

Like the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ which surprised me because it was so satisfying, the Poco X6 Pro is the same. Playing high graphics games such as Call Of Duty Mobile will get the best performance without the problem of time lags and device overheating. It is much smoother than Redmi.

TELEPHONY AND GPS

Don't worry, this time Poco X6 Pro has no issues with pulling the line or the line not being strong. Throughout my use around Kuala Lumpur, 5G with Maxis was always available with good speed and a stable connection. While in rural areas in Seremban, 4G+ with VoLTE is very helpful. GPS support is only at the beginning of use there is a location problem it takes a long time to lock. But after two-three destinations, it operates well.

CAMERA

Using the Poco X6 Pro, you should be able to expect before buying that what you pay for is what you get. The 64MP camera is a good sensor, but the HyperOS on this device doesn't have an algorithm as good as the Xiaomi 13T's for processing Leica images. Poco X6 Pro still has the problem of AI mode, not providing consistent quality. Details on each recording mode are also many which are not well preserved and are quite soft. Night mode is the result I can't forgive the most for being full of noise.

Ultra wide angle mode has good colors but details are a bit soft.

Auto mode in dim restaurants has a bit of a focus problem, but is otherwise acceptable.

Auto night mode is quite good at seeing details and removing noise.

Selfie portraits without beauty mode are not able to focus well.

Because of OIS, moving subjects can be captured well. As long as there is bright light.

Auto mode for plants looks bright and has preserved details.

Again, if the atmosphere is dim focus is problematic – but still able to try to give beautiful results.

Human portraits in daylight are quite neat, but the exposure to the light is quite a lot.

Again, if the area is poorly lit or dim, there will be focus problems again, the subject will move even if there is OIS.

AUDIO

Just like the Redmi Note 13 Pro+, the Dolby Atmos stereo speakers on the Poco X6 Pro are just fine. It's not perfect like the unsatisfying bass and mediocre volume. But the audio produced is balanced and for a device of this class I can't complain and complain more.

BATTERY

I'm not sure if it's HyperOS or Dimensity, but this Poco X6 Pro doesn't have good battery life. I expect this device to have the same battery life as most other Poco and Redmi devices which is around 6-7 hours SOT. But in my heavy usage, I only get around 4 hours SOT while light usage around 5-6 hours SOT.

The device supports 67W Turbo Charge fast charging, which can charge the device from 0% to 100% in less than 50 minutes. I have no problem with the Poco X6 Pro's battery, but Poco and Redmi fans will be disappointed.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

Here's what you get with every Poco X6 Pro purchase;

1x Poco X6 Pro.

1x 67W Turbo Charge Charger,

1x A to C Cable.

1x Thick black silicone protective frame.

CONCLUSION

There is no doubt that with HyperOS, Poco becomes more and more hyper. This X6 Pro device provides satisfactory performance with interesting customization features. The presence of ads is still unforgivable, but for the attractive sale price it's an unavoidable sacrifice. The quality of the camera is also acceptable, the battery life is a little disappointing and the design of the device although it looks boring - the construction material feels luxurious. With a selling price starting at RM1499, the X6 Pro is the ultimate performance device. If you want better camera capabilities, with an additional RM100 you can get the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ with a 200MP camera.
