Samsung Galaxy Watch's Sleep Apnea Detection System Receives FDA Approval

Samsung became the first company to receive approval from the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA) to detect sleep apnea through watches and smartphones. Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing can temporarily stop during sleep. This can cause serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke.

Samsung's sleep apnea detection system requires the wearer's sleep time to be tracked for four hours a day for two days. When detecting symptoms of sleep apnea, the user will be given a notification on the watch as well as the Samsung Health application. With this notification, users can seek medical treatment to reduce the possibility of health complications occurring before it is too late.

With approval by the FDA this week and the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in October last year, Samsung will offer a sleep apnea detection feature on Galaxy Watch devices in Q3 2024 starting in the United States. It can only be activated on watch wearers aged 22 and above.
