TAI KAAN Fighter Aircraft Takes First Flight

The Turkiye TAI TF-X fifth generation fighter program this week officially adopted the new name TAI Kaan which means "King of Kings". Two days ago Kaan finally managed to make the first flight since the project was announced in 2015. This is seen as another success of the Turkish military industry in producing local combat aircraft.

The Kaan is a twin-engine fighter with stealth capabilities like the Lockheed Martin F-35. It was independently developed by Turkiye after they were prevented from buying the F-35 aircraft by the United States following the purchase of the S400 missile system from Russia. This aircraft is equipped with two General Electric F100 engines that are quite old.

In the future, Turkiye's own designed engine will be used to allow the entire aircraft to use locally made components. When operational later, Kaan will replace the F-4 Phantom and F-16 aircraft currently used by Turkiye. Four years ago Turkiye invited Malaysia to participate in the TF-X program as Malaysia was looking for a replacement aircraft for the Mig-29 Fulcrum.
