TikTok Videos With Music By UMG Artists Start Muting Today

As we reported yesterday, Universal Music Group (UMG) is not continuing to license their library of artists' songs from use on TikTok and TikTok Music. The content licensing is until January 31, 2024 only which raises the question of what happens to the videos that use UMG's music?

The answer is that today TikTok videos with music by UMG artists have started to be muted. Video owners are given the option to replace the background music with other music. But this is a laborious process because often the new songs chosen are not the same as the old music especially for dance trend videos for example.

Among the prominent artists under UMG are Siti Nurhaliza, Joe Flizzow, P Ramlee, Ella, Dewa 19, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, SZA, Drake, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Adele, and Coldplay.
