5G network support in Malaysia is still new with it currently covering 80% of the populated area and almost 30% of its usage. According to Counterpoint Research's latest report, over 2 billion 5G devices have been released so far with Apple and Samsung contributing to over 1 billion devices so far. 5G devices reach this figure faster than previous 4G and 3G devices.
In Malaysia, it is estimated that between 50-60% of devices manufactured in Malaysia throughout 2023 will support 5G. This is lower when compared to Singapore which reaches 80%. Nevertheless, Malaysia is still ahead of Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines where the production of 5G devices last year was between 20-50%.
5G devices have entered the Malaysian market since 2020 even though at that time this network was still in the testing phase in our country. Among the obstacles to the higher adoption of 5G devices in Malaysia are the still relatively high prices and telecommunications companies that have yet to offer truly affordable 5G plans compared to 4G plans.
