Airbnb updated the guidelines for the use of closed circuit cameras (CCTV) by owners of rental units. It is now banned from use in the entire unit to protect the privacy of the tenants. Previously, they were allowed to place CCTV cameras in public spaces such as living rooms and corridors only for the purpose of monitoring customers who rent.
These guidelines apply to all Airbnb unit owners around the world starting next April 30. Unit owners are given time to remove the CCTV cameras that have been installed. The use of cameras on the external space of the unit such as on the doorbell is still allowed. If a CCTV camera is placed on the exterior of the unit, the owner must notify the tenant of the location where it is placed.
The use of CCTV cameras is a subject that Airbnb tenants have long raised as there are many cases of them being hidden in bedrooms and bathrooms. Tenants feel their privacy is being invaded while unit owners say it is their right to monitor to ensure they have evidence of damage caused by tenants.
