Apple's electric car (EV) project, Project Titan, was halted this week, bringing to an end a decade-long effort. The various issues faced were factors in Project Titan failing to produce Apple's first EV. According to The New York Times, Apple has poured $10 billion into Project Titan.
Obviously money is not the cause of this project being buried. On the other hand is the issue of self-driving software that Apple failed to develop. As we've previously reported, the Level 5 self-driving software that manufacturers want to achieve is still far from reality. At this point self-driving technology is only Level 3.
Elon Musk has said Level 5 self-driving cars will arrive by 2020 at which time Tesla will start offering taxi services. The target has been met and Elon is no longer talking about it.
Various challenges facing all types of weather, safety factors and technologies that are not yet mature enough cause Level 5 self-driving cars to be a reality. Apple is often labeled a company that waits for the right time before launching a product. It seems that with what it wants to achieve seems impossible it is better to just cancel it first.
