Appel is being sued in a class action by more than 30 individuals in California for stalking using the AirTag object tracker. A lawsuit was filed in 2022 but Apple is trying to appeal to have the suit dismissed. However, the judge found that the plaintiff presented sufficient evidence that Apple had liability for negligence when their products were used for the purpose of stalking.
Its cheap selling price makes it a device of choice to be used for the purpose of tracking an individual's movements without being noticed. The lawsuit was filed accusing Apple of marketing the AirTag without putting sufficient security features in place to prevent it from being misused for snooping purposes.
After AirTag began to be misused, Apple introduced various security features such as detecting the presence of an unknown AirTag directly on the device and activating an alarm to make it easier for victims to find it. In fact, Apple and Google jointly launched the AirTag tracking system on Android devices as a security measure. Only Apple has been sued so far, although object tracking devices are produced by several other companies such as Samsung and Tile.
