Bill Banning TikTok Passed by the United States House of Representatives

The United States House of Representatives yesterday unanimously passed a bill that would force Bytedance to sell TikTok if it wants to continue operating in their country. It received a 352-65 vote and now needs to pass the Senate before being signed by President Biden to take effect.

If this happens, TikTok will have to be sold to a US-owned entity within six months. TikTok has already issued a statement that they will oppose the bill which is seen as baseless. Previously, the banning of TikTok in Montana was rejected by the court because it was found to violate the freedom of speech enshrined in the United States constitution.

President Biden previously issued a statement that he would support any bill to ban Tiktok that passed the Senate. The reason America gave was that TikTok gave China access to the data of 170 million users in America which was seen as an intelligence move. Until now America has still failed to prove this ever happened especially after all American user data was transferred to Oracle's browser in the country.

The trade war between the United States is heating up if Bytedance is forced to sell TikTok. In addition, the United States also began an investigation into Chinese-made cars in the United States that are also believed to pose a national security risk.
