In 2022, Apple introduced Emergency SOS, which is satellite communication support for emergency purposes. It is supported on iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and some Android devices such as Samsung Galaxy S24, Huawei MatePad Pro 11″ 2024 or even Honor Magic6 Pro.
Each Android manufacturer uses their own technology. Samsung and Honor for example rely on Qualcomm chips. In the future satellite communication support for Android will continue to be built into the operating system. Android Authority found evidence that this feature will be offered through the Google Messages app. This feature is expected to arrive on Android 15.
In Malaysia this satellite communication support is not offered. But in the future, we may be able to use it because CelcomDigi and SES have collaborated to explore communication technology for this emergency messaging.
