Malaysian Broadband Service Quality Mandatory Standard Raised To 7.7 Mbps

The Mandatory Quality of Service Standard (MSQoS) for broadband services in Malaysia will increase 208% to 7.7 Mbps starting April 1. This is an improvement from the 2.5 Mbps speed used previously. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching in an oral statement in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The updated MSQoS by the Communications and Multimedia Commission stipulates that broadband service providers must ensure an average download speed of no less than 7.7 Mbps this year. MSQoS will also be increased to at least 10 Mbps in 2025. With the new standard coming into effect next month, the 5G plans offered by some local telecommunication companies will not exceed the MSQoS standard.

There are still 5G plans in Malaysia that put a speed limit of 1Mbps which can be categorized as a broadband "speed" standard of more than two decades which is fast which certainly does not deserve to be advertised as a 4G plan let alone 5G in the year 20245.
