SKMM : There is a Significant Increase in Harmful Content on Social Media




The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has now shared that there has been a significant increase in harmful content on social media and also OTT (Over The Top) platforms. In parallel, SKMM emphasized that it will not compromise and tolerate any spreading of extreme provocative content on social media.


For the year 2023 alone, a total of 35,490 contents have been taken down due to harm, including hate speech, fraud, illegal sales, gambling and even fake news.


What is worrying is that for the first two months of 2024 alone, the number of content that was taken down due to harmfulness has reached 27,115 content.


SKMM also emphasized that sharing obscene and threatening content is an offense under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (AKM) 1998, which can lead to a maximum fine of RM50,000 or one year in prison or both if convicted.
