Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 has been officially launched today as a more affordable flagship chip compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 used in devices such as Xiaomi 14, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12. The difference in this chip lies in the core configuration, camera capabilities and also the modem used.
The Snapdragon 8 s Gen 3 utilizes eight with a 1+4+3 Kryo CPU cluster configuration as well as the latest Adreno GPU. The main core of the Cortex-X4 CPU works at a speed of 3.0 GHz, 4x CPU Cortex-A720 at 2.8 GHz, and 3x CPU Cortex-A520 at a speed of 2.0 GHz.
This is in contrast to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 which uses a 1+5+2 Kryo CPU cluster configuration consisting of a Cortex-X4 CPU working at 3.3GHz, 3x Cortex-A720 3.2GHz CPU, 2x Cortex-A720 3.0 GHz CPU and 2x Cortex-A720 CPU -A520 at 2.3 GHz speed.
The modem system is just a Snapdragon X70 5G that supports downloads up to 5Gbps instead of the Snapdragon X75 5G which is faster up to 10 Gbps. Even so, devices that use 8s Gen 3 still support WiFi 7. Another notable difference is that video recording capabilities are also lower, up to 4K 60FPS only.
Speaking of graphics capabilities, Qualcomm says they are aiming for console-like performance through Ray Tracing and Snapdragon Elite Gaming support. The emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities is the same as it can run models such as Baichuan-7B, Llama 2 and Gemini Nano.
Honor, iQOO, Realme, Redmi and Xiaomi are the first five companies that will use Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 in their released devices. The first devices with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will be announced as early as this month.
