Taiwan Will Build Its Own Satellite Internet Network

The war in Ukraine shows how easily the communication infrastructure in use today can be disabled. When this happens, the internet network using satellite becomes the only best solution. The New York Times today reported that Taiwan will build its own satellite internet network to deal with a conflict with China should it occur.

Services like Starlink exist but Taiwan worries it could be disrupted at any time by SpaceX's whims. This has already happened in Ukraine causing drone operations to be disrupted. Satellites for internet networks from space are targeted to be launched as early as 2026 using entirely local expertise. A total of 40 local companies have been identified to be the supply chain of the local satellite program.

Another challenge for Taiwan is to launch their own satellites as they do not have expertise in this field. Previously, satellites for local use were launched by private companies such as Arianne. To realize this dream, President Tsai Ing-wen has pledged $1.3 billion for the country's space program.

Building your own satellite internet network is a huge undertaking. In addition to SpaceX, Amazon also offers the same service through Project Kuiper. In Malaysia, the local company Angkasa-X also wants to offer the same service specifically for the Southeast Asian chain..
