Telegram service in Spain has been blocked due to piracy issues. The Spanish High Court sided with the media companies Atresmedia, EGEDA, Mediaset and Telefonica who filed an application to block Telegram because their content was uploaded to Telegram without permission.
Telegram is the fourth most popular messaging app in Spain and the restrictions imposed will impact around 8 million users. Services should be blocked by Spanish telecommunications companies starting tomorrow but some companies have already started blocking since yesterday.
This ban will only be in effect for a few days depending on the steps taken by Telegram regarding pirated content. Telegram has been banned in Brazil, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Iran, and Cuba for various reasons. In Malaysia it is no secret that Telegram is used for sharing pirated content openly but KKOM has not yet taken any action on this issue.
