The Government Targets the Use of "Direct To Cell" As Early as 2025 - Phones Directly Connected Via Satellite

Communications Minister, Fahmi Fadzil today shared that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) is examining several new methods to continue improving internet service coverage in Malaysia.

Among the methods being considered include the use of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites such as Starlink in providing backhaul for towers in several locations, as well as using the Fixed Wireless Broadband method to help backhaul towers that may be far from fiber optic reach.

In addition, the government is examining the use of "Direct To Cell", which allows smartphones to connect directly through satellites - at the same time making satellites operate as if they were telecommunications towers. With this step, the coverage rate is expected to be more extensive, simultaneously covering various areas that were difficult to reach before.

The Minister of Communications stated that this new technology may be implemented as early as 2025.
