YouTube Clarifies What Videos Should Be Labeled With "Altered Or Synthetic Content"

Last November, YouTube announced that videos with artificial intelligence content must be labeled by channel owners. This is because generative AI technology is becoming more and more sophisticated so that sometimes the generated image is difficult to distinguish from the real image. Recently, YouTube further clarified which videos should be labeled.

According to YouTube videos that have obviously been modified, edited or generated such as animations, special effects, filters, lighting effects, fantasy elements and the like do not need to be labeled. The necessary videos are;

Using a real person's impersonation: Usually a deepfake or CGI video that mimics someone else who exists in the real world or that imitates a voice.

Modify location and event videos: For example, What If concepts for real history, alternative stories, fake cityscapes, etc.

Realistic generated scenes: 100% generated but realistic looking video like a tornado hitting a city.

Content like this needs to be labeled with channels that frequently fail to do so may be suspended from the YouTube Partner Program and the video will be deleted. Other penalties may also be imposed if the guidelines continue to be violated.

This Altered or synthetic content label will be displayed on the YouTube video player at the front or in the video description. It will first appear on the mobile device app, then on the PC and then on to the television. With this label, viewers can later know whether the video they are watching is true or false.
