Astro Holdings Berhad today announced that Astro Studios Sdn. Bhd or ASSB is now relaunched as Astro Studios. The rebranding will form a single entity that offers a wide range of filmmaking, editing, broadcasting and more services that will be open to storytellers, directors and producers.
Interestingly, Astro Studios is not just a normal production studio but also offers Extended Reality (XR) virtual production capabilities using Unreal Engine technology. Not only that, Astro Studios can also handle video copyright solution projects for remote broadcasting, audio and visual post-production as well as cinema and streaming needs that require Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos formats.
In other words, Astro Studios is a one-stop center for local and international content creators to enjoy what Astro's internal team has been doing. Astro Studios is split into three divisions namely Astro Studios Productions for long distance production and broadcasting, film recording complete with physical studio sets or virtual sets as has been used for 3300 hours of content, hundreds of sports matches and dozens of projects with international studios.
Then there is Astro Design+Motion for graphic design, animation, XR augmented reality content creation with Unreal Engine and others. Among the things they have done are 25 sets of live XR broadcasts, 4800 seconds of computer generated content and handled 6 e-sports matches including Mobile Legend.
Astro Sound+Vision is for post-production such as 4K/HDR video output, color grading, full digital lab services, sound design, studio recording, film restoration and more. Among the things they have managed to do is film post-production with Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos, 850 hours of dubbing, restoring 21 35mm films and since 2022 a total of 19 local films have been successfully produced.
With the existence of Astro Studios, Astro Holdings hopes that the Malaysian film industry will be more advanced and continue to advance to a higher level. They are also exploring film development technology with international VFX and even XR shooting sets with Volume LED screens or Stagecraft as used by Disney. Astro Studios will also try to integrate generative AI into their production works but will be careful not to rely entirely on AI because they still want a touch of human creativity.
