Another bill that would force Bytedance to sell their TikTok business was passed by the United States House of Representatives last Saturday. This time the bill was combined with a bill approving financial aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan for military purposes.
The original bill that was approved last March has not yet been discussed by the Senate due to opposition from several parties. By combining this new bill with an aid package for their allies, supporters of selling TikTok hope it can be passed more quickly.
If it receives approval in the Senate, Bytedance will be given up to 12 months to sell their TikTok business. If it fails to do so, TikTok will be banned from operating in the United States. Apps can no longer be listed on the Android and iOS stores.
TikTok has already issued an official statement saying that the act of banning their application can be seen as an attack on the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the United States constitution. America wants TikTok to be sold because it is alleged to be a proxy for China.
