Boston Dynamics has completed development of the Atlas robot known for its ability to walk, jump, do somersaults, dance and assist workers on construction sites. The announcement was made via a video uploaded on Boston Dynamics' official YouTube page.
Atlas began life under a DARPA project to develop a bipedal robot that could walk like a human. It has gone through several iterations since 2013 with it being able to slowly walk before it can run, balance its body despite being kicked and then perform somersaults like a gymnast.
Unlike other Boston Dynamics robots such as Spot and Stretch, Atlas was never sold commercially. Since the beginning it has been a platform for Boston Dynamics to test various sensors and their latest robotic technology. It is unknown what Boston Dynamic will develop next and whether Atlas will be replaced by a more capable robot.
