A day after announcing the end of development for the Atlas robot, Boston Dynamics announced a new model of the Atlas that uses all-electric power. This new version of the Atlas has a slimmer body, no longer uses a hydraulic system and will be offered commercially to interested customers.
In terms of movement, the new Atlas also seems more capable. In the announcement video, Atlas is seen lying on the floor but is later able to get back up without help. The video is too short to show its capabilities compared to previous Atlas models.
As a reminder, the previous model could jump and do somersaults like an acrobat. Without a hydraulic system, a heavy robot cannot jump high. It is not known if Boston Dynamics already has a customer for this new Atlas model.
