Intel Lunar Lake Chip Will Have AI Processing Power Reaching 100 TOPS

This year will be the year of PC AI which sees new PCs having the ability to run artificial intelligence directly from the device. Some early PC AIs were announced by Microsoft, Lenovo and HP a few weeks ago. Although the first generation of AI PCs with Intel Core Ultra chips have already been launched, Intel has just announced their processors under the Lunar Lake family will have AI processing capabilities of up to 100 TOPS.

This was announced by Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger during the Intel Vision 2024 event that took place yesterday. As a comparison Intel Core Ultra chip (Meteor Lake) has only 10 TOPS NPU capabilities. But on the Lunar Lake chip, the NPU has the ability to process 45 TOPS. Over 55 TOPS come from the CPU and GPU built into this chip.

Lunar Lake is a chip designed for laptops. It is expected to be able to provide competition to the Snapdragon X Elite chip which has the ability to process AI 45 TOPS. The first computer with X Elite will launch in H2 2024.

To be eligible to be categorized as an AI PC, the computer needs to have the ability to process AI reaching 45 TOPS, come with a Copilot button and support Copilot. The next generation of PC AI will need to have high processing capabilities to enable Copilot and other AI models to run directly from the device as opposed to requiring a connection to the cloud today.
