Road Tax Structure For EVs To Be Announced Later This Month

Electric vehicles (EV) are currently not subject to road tax until the end of 2025. as a way of encouraging their use in Malaysia. But this will not remain free forever and with the government now set to announce the road tax structure for EVs at the end of this April.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government remains committed to encouraging the use of EVs. Therefore the road tax charged will still be cheaper than fossil fuel vehicles (ICE). However, the challenge facing the government is comparing the engine capacity (CC) of an ICE vehicle with an EV.

In other countries EVs still enjoy free road tax until the next decade because they want to achieve low carbon emission levels. At the same time hybrid vehicles are also subject to lower road tax than ICE because they can also reduce air pollution. There is a recommendation in Malaysia, EV road tax is charged in direct proportion to the electric motor power used.
