Russian President Directs Development of Locally Made Consoles

The 9th generation console war was won by the PlayStation 5. Consoles that used to be hard to buy can now be easily purchased from various stores in Malaysia. However, in Russia, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles are difficult to buy due to trade restrictions imposed after the country invaded Ukraine.

Therefore President Vladimir Putin issued an order for Russian-made consoles to be produced as an alternative to foreign consoles. The government needs to consider the need to produce consoles at home and also mobile consoles before June 15. In addition to consoles, Russia will also develop video game engines, video games and cloud services that are also entirely locally designed.

The Organization for the Development of the Russian Video Game Industry published a five-year roadmap last February with the target of local consoles being produced by 2026-2027. VK Group which has its own video game studio will be given the responsibility of developing software and games for this console. While GS Group was given the responsibility of developing console hardware.

Russia has a history of developing its own consoles since 1978 when it was still in the era of the Soviet Union. This country is also responsible for producing the world's most popular video game, Tetris.
