Tesla Settles Death Case Due to Self-driving System Out of Court

Tesla decided to settle an accident lawsuit that resulted in the death of a Tesla Model X owner out of court. In an incident that occurred in 2018, Wei Huang, an Apple engineer, died after his Model X crashed into a road barrier while the Autopilot self-driving mode was in use.

The Huang family is suing Tesla claiming Autopilot should have prevented this accident from happening. Tesla, on the other hand, is ready to prove that the accident happened because Huang was driving first and did not pay attention to the surrounding conditions. The case was settled out of court the day before the case went to trial. The amount of compensation given to the Huang family is confidential.

The Autopilot system is not a self-driving system that allows the car to be driven completely without human intervention. It's just a basic ADAS when compared to the FSD system that Telsa offers on their vehicles now. However, the NTSB in the United States is investigating several more accidents involving Tesla vehicles in self-driving mode.

Last year leaked data showed Tesla received thousands of reports from Autopilot users when it wasn't working as it should. At this point only the manufacturer Mercedes Benz passed. Level 3 self-driving standards that provide more autonomy but still require a human driver to operate the vehicle.
