The World's Largest Camera With 3.2 Gigapixel Sensor Ready To Build

The largest sensor on a smartphone at this point is the 200MP one used on devices like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. But it is dwarfed when compared to the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) which currently holds the record as the world's largest digital camera because it is equipped with a 3.2 Gigapixel sensor.

The construction of this camera was finally completed after the construction started in 2020. Originally the sensor was supposed to be 3.1 Gigapixel but it was increased to 3.2 Gigapixel through the use of 201 sensors of 16MP combined. The camera lens attached to the LSST has a diameter of 1.5 meters. All three LSST giant lenses were built by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

With it now completed, it is ready to be placed at the Vera C. Rubin observatory which is also under construction in Chile. When operating LSST will take long exposure photos for 15 seconds every 20 seconds. The images taken are used to study outer space and gain a deeper understanding of dark matter.
