Will artificial intelligence (AI) produce a generation of lazy students? This is the concern among teaching staff and academics after ChatGPT was launched two years ago. Turnitin, a software used by lecturers and teachers has released a report that found 11% of student papers are now written with the help of AI.
The report was published after analyzing more than 200 papers reviewed by Turnitin's AI writing tracking feature. Of this sample, 22 million (11%) contained at least 20% of the content of the paper written by AI. Meanwhile, 6 million (3%) contain at least 80% of the content of the paper written by AI.
The majority of papers at this point are still written by students themselves. Academics' worries seem to have yet to materialize. From our observations, AI is still not able to write as well as humans. But in the future with more recent models, it may increase and be difficult to detect.
