Apple Fights €1.8 Billion Fine Imposed By EU

Last March, the European Union (EU) imposed a fine of 1.8 billion Euros (~RM 9.2 billion) due to abuse of power for the distribution of music streaming applications. The EU says Apple has used the development authority of the iOS platform to prevent app developers from offering lower prices through out-of-app subscriptions.

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple today announced they will fight the fines imposed on them. This is because according to Apple, the EU has failed to prove that consumers are burdened by their practices. Apple declined to comment that they filed their opposition in the EU court in Luxemborg.

Since 2019, Spotify has filed several complaints with the EU regarding Apple's practice of charging more to subscribe to their services in the App Store. Apple now allows alternative app stores only in the EU but still charges a fee to ensure that every app offered on the alternative store is safe.

In the ongoing case against Epic Games, Apple said only 38 out of 65,000 (equivalent to 0.06%) developers applied to use the payment system outside the App Store ecosystem.
