SCREEN AND DESIGN

Oppo A60 uses a 6.67″ IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. It is also a kind of dynamic that changes depending on the situation. Users can choose to set it with a high refresh rate or lower it to 60Hz for battery saving. In addition to offering an aspect ratio of 18:9 along with an uneven bezel size with a large chin.

The IPS LCD screen used has a small hole in the middle for a single selfie camera with a 13MP resolution. The screen is still good despite supporting HD+ but the shortcoming lies in the limited viewing angle. Colors are also less vibrant especially when used to watch videos on Netflix. But if you just want to use it to browse the web and social media applications, it's acceptable.

It's just that the scrolling experience is not very smooth especially when used on long web content. This situation is not something new, in fact, it is a common weakness for such screens. For a device with a selling price of less than RM1,000 can still be forgiven. In fact, it can be used as usual, especially for those who feel that the screen support offered is sufficient.

The entire device uses a different material consisting of a glossy plastic back panel along with an aluminum alloy side frame. Sincerely we say that it is still a good match of construction materials in its class since the device is very comfortable in the hand. In addition, the completely flat construction with rounded corners allows the phone to be held easily. The flat screen design also allows various content, especially videos, to be watched without issues overflowing to the sides.

Interestingly, the screen of the device also has MIL-STD military grade durability which means it is durable in various usage scenarios. We had time to test it by breaking nuts and ice and the result was that the screen was still fine to use as usual. On the back there are two bumps with a dual-camera system used on the device. A large lens dominates the bump at the top with another lens placed separately in the bump below along with an LED Flash.

The glossy back looks premium and doesn't feel cheap like most devices in the same class. Especially for the blue color or Ripple Blue which has a subtle sheen for a more striking effect. It is inspired by the beauty of the waves in the blue ocean with a unique touch like a sparkling diamond.

Special materials are also used in the manufacturing process to create a three-dimensional effect such as waves that are always undulating calmly on the surface of the sea. There is another color option called Midnight Purple but we didn't get a chance to see it with our own eyes.

The power button and audio controls can be found on the right side. All are well built to ensure comfort when fingers press. In addition to also loading the fingerprint scanner built into the power button in addition to the SIM tray is also placed on the opposite side. We like the fingerprint scanner sensor for its fast performance and ease of use.

Meanwhile, the USB-C port is at the bottom along with the speaker, microphone hole and 3.5mm audio jack. It's true that this new phone has a 3.5mm audio jack which should be an interesting plus. This is because not many manufacturers include the function in their latest devices.

As for other features, the device passes the IP54 waterproof standard which means it is resistant to splashes and dust. However, it should not be immersed directly in water. Then there is the Splash Touch feature which is said to be able to improve touch accuracy even when the finger is wet. The stereo speaker setup provided on the device is also capable of producing good sound.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

The latest software ColorOS 14 based on Android 14 is used on the device. As mentioned earlier, it has some new features that can be put to good use. For example, like the updated Aquamorphic design, more intelligent AI features and privacy protection. It's just that the problem of fat apps still exists with most of them being pre-installed directly.

It can be said that most of the home screen is occupied by games, social media and many other unnecessary applications. At the same time, it can cause some people to feel uneasy. Although it can be uninstalled, it is still considered complicated for those who do not know how.

Next, the Snapdragon 680 chip is used for the mainstay. The combination of 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of storage is considered more than adequate and can even be expanded further using a microSD slot. In general it is not the most powerful chip offering in its class but is usable enough without extreme issues for most daily tasks.

Likewise with the experience of playing a casual game that should be able to run smoothly. However, more challenging heavy games may cause problems such as lag issues. Benchmark tests were also run on the device:

CAMERA AND IMAGE QUALITY

The Oppo A60 is equipped with a dual-camera system consisting of a 50MP main camera and a 2MP bokeh camera. It offers most of the features one would expect from a device in this class. For example Night, Video, Photo, Portrait and many more. The camera also supports built-in AI and HDR to allow photos to be taken with good light balance. Next, videos can only be recorded at a maximum setting of 1080P/30fps on both sides of the camera. The picture capture option can be taken at a ratio of 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and full.

The quality of pictures taken through the main camera is not consistent. The results look good with enough detail when used in bright lighting. Color reproduction is also more than adequate in most situations. The built-in AI feature sometimes increases the contrast in the image and gives a more saturated color effect.

Meanwhile, pictures in low lighting begin to show the level of detail to be soft along with the noise problem is quite noticeable. The dedicated Night Mode function doesn't help much in this regard. Zoom support is only practical up to 3X for decent results.

BATTERY LIFE

The battery capacity of Oppo A60 is 5000mAh which also supports 33W fast charging. The device can last more than a day with normal use. Then last at least nine hours from 100% – 20% level when used for daily activities with 90Hz screen activated.

Through it the device is used for most of the daily activities such as replying to messages on Telegram, listening to spotify, taking pictures and playing casual games. All of them also involve the dependency of WiFi connection access and hostpot only. With 33W fast charging, the device can be fully charged in 90 minutes.

AUDIO PERFORMANCE

There are stereo speakers with a volume capability of up to 300%. The audio is just simple but lacks stereo while the majority of such devices are equipped with mono speakers. Loud audio is just not clear at the highest settings. There is still a 3.5mm audio jack which is very useful for a more immersive audio experience.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

Here's what's included in the device purchase box:

1 x Oppo A60.

1 x 33W Charger Head.

CONCLUSION

The Oppo A60 offers a premium experience, a good battery and many features that will make you forget for a moment about budget smartphones in the same class. As long as you can compromise with average day-to-day performance, bloatware issues and a low-resolution display. Oppo has also always done well to make this budget phone worth its price tag despite the lack of 5G support. For example, such as given IP54 standards for water resistance, stereo speakers, NFC, fast charging system, high refresh rate display and others. The Oppo A60 is available for purchase in Malaysia now with prices starting at RM699 (8/128GB) and RM799 (8/256GB).
