Former Google and OpenAI Employees Want Protection for Warning of AI Dangers

A total of 13 employees/former employees of Google Deepmind, OpenAI and Anthropic wrote an open letter asking for protection by the authorities if they warn about the dangers of AI developed by their former employers.

Among the tactics used by former employers is asking them to sign a non-disclosure document (NDA). Failure to agree to the terms of the NDA will result in their stock holdings in the company being void. Other requests contained in this open letter are

Refrain from responding to employees who raise safety concerns

Support an anonymous system for whistleblowers to inform the public and regulators about risks

Allow a culture of open criticism

Avoiding NDAs that restrict employees from speaking out

Lately many former employees of AI companies have resigned because they disagree with the direction of AI being developed. Security issues and data usage are two concerns that are often highlighted. Among the most high-profile resignations was Ilya Sutskever, chief scientist and co-founder of OpenAI who left the company earlier last month in surprise.
