Japan Passes Law Requiring Apple And Google To Allow Alternative App Stores

Previously, we have seen the European Union make changes to the law, requiring platform providers such as Apple and Google to allow third-party app stores to offer services for their respective platforms. In addition to the European Union, Japan has also passed more or less the same legislation.

With this move, Apple and Google have to allow the introduction of third-party application stores under their respective platforms in the distribution of applications, in addition to selling digital content.

In addition, the new legislation in Japan also requires platform providers not to prioritize their own services only in search results, and to be fair to other providers.

Japan will impose a fine of 20% of the local revenue of the platform in case of violation of this new legislation. Japan will enforce this new legislation at the end of 2025.
