Malaysians in populated areas are ready to use 5G networks since 2023, and earlier this year, it was announced that 80.2 percent of populated areas in Malaysia can already use the fast mobile internet network.
This 5G network is managed under the Digital Nasional Berhad company that develops the network infrastructure, and is used by most local telecommunication companies. What is interesting is that DNB's equity is also held by a number of local telecommunications companies, such as CelcomDigi, U Mobile, YTL Power International and Telekom Malaysia.
Today, Malaysia's Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil received a courtesy visit from China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Jin Zhuanglong, where they discussed the development of the second 5G network in Malaysia.
In response to questions from the media, these local telecommunications companies will complete the equity holding process in DNB on June 21, a few months after it was supposed to be completed at the end of last year.
According to Fahmi Fadzil again, he said that the process of developing this second 5G network will only be open to telecommunications companies that have completed their equity holdings in DNB. So far details such as when this network will begin to be developed, and also who will be able to benefit from it are not yet known.
Even so, it is seen to be in line with the government's plan to ensure that 80 percent of the whole of Malaysia will be able to use the 5G network by the end of 2026.
