America Wants to Build a Supercomputer Five Times More Powerful Than the Current Fastest

The status of the world's most powerful supercomputer is held by Frontier with processing capabilities reaching exaFLOPS levels that are twice as powerful as Aurora in second place. Although the Frontier is not yet capable of being challenged, the United States is now embarking on a project to build a supercomputer that is between 3-5 times more powerful than the Frontier.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has opened a proposal paper to build a supercomputer that will go by the name Discover. Interested companies need to ensure that Discover can be operational by early 2028 at the latest.

It will be used to research drug development, treat cancer, find sustainable energy solutions, predict the impact of climate change and train artificial intelligence (AI). The development of Discover is expected to ensure the United States' advantage in the supercomputing arena.

To ensure that they are always ahead, America has imposed technology restrictions on China that aims for supercomputer capabilities to reach 300 exaFLOPs by 2025. Some Chinese supercomputer companies are no longer allowed to buy AI components and chips with reduced power can only be offered.
