Bangladesh Blocks Internet Access To Prevent Student Demonstrations

Internet services across Bangladesh have been blocked for the past 24 hours. According to the Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology of Bangladesh, this action was taken to ensure the "safety of the people" following the demonstration organized by the students since last week.

The protest happened because the job quota system for civil servants was allegedly not transparent and only selected government supporters. As a result, 22 people have been killed due to clashes involving students, government supporters and the police. The police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

Internet services especially through mobile devices are affected at this point as they are the primary access for users in Bangladesh. Social media mediums have been used by students to spread information and organize demonstrations. With access blocked, the government may want to try to make this process more difficult.
