Google Begins Testing Gemini-Powered Robots

Three years ago, Alphabet X which is one of Google's companies started using Everyday Robot for trivial cleaning work around the campus. While laying off many workers last year, Google also stopped using these robots. Most recently, this Everyday Robot has been recycled to be integrated with Gemini.

Google is testing robots with this Gemini in DeepMind's office specifically for intricacies of instruction. This robot can understand human commands by saying "OK, Robot". One of the examples of commands given is to invite this robot to draw on the whiteboard, it will say "OK, give me a minute. Thinking with Gemini …”. A Google representative also drew a map by hand on a whiteboard labeled "Blue Area" to instruct the robot to follow the map and move to its own destination. Surprisingly it can be understood and managed to reach.

This test shows a 90% success rate after 50 different interactions with Google employees. For now it is still uncertain whether Google will launch a new robot or the generative AI on the robot is just an early stage test. With robots that have begun to be integrated with AI that can learn and understand itself, will the Skynet incident in the Transformers movie become a reality?
