Japan finally succeeded in ending the use of floppy disks to conduct business with government agencies. Japan's Digital Minister, Taro Kono, said that the use of floppy disks will officially stop on June 29. More than 1000 regulations governing the use of floppy disks in government affairs have finally been amended.
The digitization of Japanese government affairs was started by Taro Kono in 2022. Tokyo became the first city in Japan to stop the need for physical storage in affairs in 2021. It is quite surprising that the need to deal with government departments using fax machines also only ended in 2021 but received the objections of various agencies at that time.
Although Japan had an image as a sophisticated country during the 80s, the use of the latest technology began to slow down in the 90s due to the economic recession that has not yet recovered to the level of 40 years ago. The older generation is not ready to make changes in daily work and learning new technologies takes time to train staff.
