LG Acquires Athom to Further Develop ThinQ Ecosystem

LG ThinQ is an ecosystem of Internet of Things devices by LG. The ThinQ brand is also for all things smart including AI, exclusive apps and more. Most recently, LG has taken over Athom, a brand of Internet of Things devices from the Netherlands that is also the manufacturer of Homey. This is to further expand the ThinQ ecosystem.

This deal gives LG an 80% stake in Athom. In another three years, LG intends to take over Athom completely. LG will integrate Homey directly into the ThinQ ecosystem. The new offer that will be given to users is, ThinQ x Homey will be the hub of Internet of Things devices powered by AI that can also understand the needs of users.

Homey under Athom supports connection to over 50,000 different devices including Philips Hue, IKEA and more. Each supported device can also be connected with various methods such as Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, WiFi or even Bluetooth. This acquisition will still ensure that Athom moves on its own as usual, for example continuing to sell Homey Pro.

LG's move is similar to Samsung's takeover of SmartThings in 2014. Now SmartThings is the main ecosystem of Internet of Things devices and Samsung's own powerful search network. Let's all look forward to more information about LG ThinQ x Athom Homey, such as whether they will develop various products to Malaysia and so on.
