Cyber crime is seen to be becoming more and more common in this country with the increase in incidents of bullying and online fraud (scam) thus posing a great risk to many parties. Low levels of awareness and too gullible cause many individuals from all backgrounds to fall victim to the criminal scam.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil informed that more than RM1 billion of Malaysians' money was lost as a result of being deceived by an online fraud syndicate that was recorded throughout the last year. Meanwhile, no less than 10 cases of cyber bullying were reported every day in the same year. It involves case reports in various types of social media platforms which can then cause concern due to the impact on social development which is very critical.
Among the MCMC's efforts in fighting the crime is through the announcement of the need for social media and internet messaging services that have at least eight million registered users in Malaysia. Through the new regulatory framework, social media providers will have to be held accountable for criminal activities that occur on their platforms.
Fahmi also added that the fight against online crime is the focus of regional countries. Therefore, every authority needs to join hands to deal with this situation in ensuring a safer internet ecosystem for children and families.
