New Legislation With a Focus on Combating Cyberbullying Is Expected to Be Introduced This October

Ministers in the Prime Minister's Department have now shared that a special team is examining the entirety of the Penal Code (Act 574), before making amendments in an effort to combat the symptoms of cyber bullying. This new legislation is expected to be presented in Parliament at the October 2024 session.

For this purpose, an engagement session with the Ministry of Digital, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Communications will be held to look at the definition of cyber bullying - which is still not in the national legislation for the time being.

This will also take into account the definition and so on, since there are allegations that say freedom to say anything, and state that in cyber bullying there is no physical contact. This also leads to a number of offences, including doxxing which reveals a person's personal information publicly, in addition to creating hatred and so on.

Moving forward, we will be able to see the definition of the term "cyber bullying", while allowing cyber bullying to be classified as an offense in Malaysia specifically.
