NFC Forum Announces “Multi-Purpose Tap” Standard



The NFC Forum is the standards body for Near Field Communication or NFC communication technology. Among its members are Apple, Google, Huawei, Identiv, Infineon, NXP, Qualcomm, Sony, and ST Microelectronics. Recently they have announced the standard for NFC Multi-Purpose Tap feature.



The main idea of ​​this feature is not new, NFC Forum wants the contactless concept whether for payment, authentication, unlocking something and more to be common offered on various devices regardless of phones or wearables. Among the features they say can be introduced are contactless payments that allow users to continue receiving receipts and reward points, easily buy airline tickets with discounts, touch product packages to get more information, identity verification, and more.



To make this feature successful, device manufacturers need to allow read and write features using NFC on their respective devices, then every payment terminal manufacturer, reward point provider for various services, every ticket seller regardless of entertainment or flight also needs to integrate NFC support for easy device read the appropriate data.



NFC Forum has also prepared a guide NFC Multi-Purpose Tap: One Tap, Unlimited Potential. With big brands like Apple, Google, Huawei and many more hopefully coming their respective devices can also support this more advanced and useful NFC feature.
